Brockhole Windermere dining options

"Brockhole on Windermere" in Windermere, England, is much more than just a restaurant - it is a versatile experience center located on the shores of Lake Windermere, operated by the Lake District National Park Authority. It combines dining options with a variety of recreational activities and a stunning natural setting, making it a popular destination for families, adventure seekers, and nature lovers. The estate, originally built in the late 19th century by wealthy silk merchant William Gaddum, features a historic house and 12 acres of beautiful gardens designed by landscape architect Thomas Mawson. While the main house is no longer open to the public, the surrounding gardens, lake access, and various dining facilities form the heart of the visitor center.

Brockhole activities at Lake Windermere

The dining options at "Brockhole on Windermere" are diverse and cater to different needs, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. The Brockhole Café is the central hub for a relaxed meal, offering seating both indoors and on a covered terrace overlooking the lake and the distant Langdale Pikes. Here, traditional Cumbrian cuisine is emphasized, such as the Fish Finger Sandwich, which actually consists of tender fish goujons on a brioche bun with homemade tartar sauce – a dish celebrated for its freshness and flavor. Also popular is the Ham Hock Hash Brown, served with spinach and a poached egg, making it a hearty brunch option. For those with a sweet tooth, there is a selection of homemade cakes, with the oversized scones served with jam and clotted cream often highlighted as the best in the region.

Brockhole family friendly attractions

In addition to the café, there is the more upscale Gaddum Restaurant, named after the family that originally inhabited the estate. It offers a more refined menu, utilizing seasonal ingredients from the recently revitalized kitchen garden. A highlight here is the Afternoon Tea, served with a selection of delicate sandwiches, scones, and artistic desserts, and is often described as one of the best in the area. Main courses, such as the locally inspired game dish with fresh herbs and garden vegetables, showcase the care that goes into the preparation. The spectacular views of the lake and the Mawson gardens make dining here a special experience.

Lake District sights and dining

For visitors on the go or those taking advantage of numerous activities like Treetop Trek, kayaking, or mini-golf, additional options like the Lakeshore Café and The Garden Shed are available. The Lakeshore Café, located right on the lakeshore, is known for its fish and chips, served with a view of the water and considered some of the best in Windermere. The Garden Shed, near the adventure playground, offers light snacks such as sandwiches and an impressive selection of English Lakes ice cream, which delights both young and old with its numerous flavors – from classic vanilla to creative concoctions. During the season, the Brockhole BBQ adds fresh, locally sourced meat grilled over charcoal, filling the air with enticing aromas.

Brockhole cafe and restaurant reviews

The beverage selection is equally diverse, focusing on quality and local produce. Freshly brewed coffee is available in both the café and The Gaddum, often described as the perfect complement to the meals, while the Lakeshore Café and The Garden Shed offer refreshing soft drinks and seasonal beverages. The option to enjoy food and drinks as takeaway fits perfectly with an active day by the lake or in the gardens.

The service at "Brockhole on Windermere" is generally perceived as friendly and helpful, with staff striving to create a positive atmosphere even during busy times – such as during school holidays or special events like the Halloween special. The café and The Gaddum staff are particularly praised for their attentiveness and good humor, although there may occasionally be wait times on hectic days. Cleanliness is usually exemplary, though there are sporadic complaints about the upkeep of outdoor areas or the speed of clearing tables – a valid point in such a heavily frequented place.

There is currently no cafe facility (as 02 March 2025) - if the lake ferry driver tells you there is..don’t believe them!

It was really cold and most the attractions were shut so I don’t think we saw it at its best. Standard rip off parking prices.

Went Feb weekend before half term, grounds nice, playground great, zip world great BUT issue was cafe is shut for the foreseeable future, find it bonkers the info on the website said they had a cafe open. We had taken my mother so she could walk round then stay warm in the cafe whilst waiting for us to finish zipworld. Please can Brockhole put this info out on website and social to help people plan their day? FYI. The cabin by the playground offers snacks and hot drinks but there’s very limited seating inside, there is more outside so best to plan for this.

Info on the website not matching the actual services available. Playground for children only suitable for age 7+. Expensive car park, minimum 2 hours per 5£. Nice location, should be nice in other times of the year when you can actually find something working.

We booked the archery activity. Despite arriving slightly late the instructor was extremely accommodating with repeating guidance and easing us in to the steps on our very first experience of archery. He continued to provide pointers and feedback in how we could improve our practice whilst throwing in a couple of challenges for those of us who love to get competitive. I’d definitely be booking this place in the future!
